Nitere Software offers a rich implementation of Lumina's peer-reviewed camera calibration and luminance estimation methodology.

Developed in-house and built on our published method for calibrating and estimating real-world luminance from an ordinary camera. Mount it near the driver’s eye position, drive the scene, and recover a luminance map from the footage instead of stopping traffic to take spot-meter readings point by point.

We use it in our own visibility and conspicuity casework, and it is available to other practitioners who need the same kinds of measurements.

A Method for Digital Video Camera Calibration for Luminance Estimation

In this paper, the authors present a methodology for calculating luminance from a digital video camera. The methodology allows the user to mount a camera near the driver’s eye location and drive through a scene capturing video; still images are then exported and analyzed to create a luminance map. The resulting estimates were compared to values measured with a Konica Minolta LS-100 and shown to be repeatable and accurate across an entire scene.

A More Robust Method for Digital Video Camera Calibration for Luminance Estimation

In this paper, the authors update this methodology for calculating luminance from a digital camera. The updated calibration method results in more accurate luminance estimation over the entire range of the camera’s sensor, particularly in low-light conditions. Further refinements to the fitting methodology result in a robust calibration even in the presence of measurement noise. The methodology allows for the user to mount a camera near the driver’s eye location and to drive through a scene capturing video or still images, which are then analyzed to create a luminance map.
